Open to the public, the free clinics will be led by local attorneys and will take place on March 25, from 1pm to 5pm.
Arizona NORML, a state chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), announced today it will offer Expungement Resource Clinics at Sol Flower dispensary in Sun City. Upcoming clinics will take place from 1- 5 p.m., on Saturday, March 25, at the Sol Flower wellness classroom, located at 13650 N. 99th Avenue, on the corner of 99thAvenue and W. Thunderbird Road, in Sun City.
Cannabis usage has been legalized for adult consumption in Arizona for more than two years. Open to the public, at these free clinics, individuals with previous convictions can consult one-on-one with Arizona attorneys and learn how to properly petition for expungement. Arizona NORML hosted multiple expungement clinics in 2021 that drew significant attendance.
In contrast with the organization’s earlier expungement clinics, its new series of clinics will utilize the newly effective A.R.S. § 13-911, which allows for the sealing of a wider variety of criminal background documents. Instead of limiting eligibility by reference to how much cannabis someone possessed, under the new law, one’s eligibility depends on the dangerousness of an offense, how much time has passed since the completion of a sentence, and whether sealing the record would negatively affect public safety.
“We are thrilled to build upon our impactful education series in partnership with Copperstate Farms and Sol Flower and provide relief to a greater number of people,” said Arizona NORML’s State Director, Jon Udell. “Whether someone has been subjected to prosecution for simple possession or a non-violent sale, they deserve the ability to qualify for better housing and student loans, pass criminal background checks for better employment opportunities, and more.”
Expungement clinic attendees are encouraged to bring as much documentation as possible relative to their previous case or arrest in Arizona, such as an arrest record, a criminal complaint, and/or a sentencing order. Individuals who do not have documentation are still encouraged to attend the clinic.
