Concentrate real hard: it’s 710!

Profundities run rampant in cannabis culture. Ordinary items, songs, locations, even numbers often take on new, deeper meanings when examined through a danker lens. Surely it took a deeply philosophical mind under the thrall of freshly-torched shatter to look at today’s date on the calendar, imagine it inverted, and marvel at the waxy serendipity of what was taking place.

That’s right, it’s 7/10. The lesser-known cousin of both 4/20 and 6/18 (Jack Herer Day) in the marijuana holiday almanac, July 10th is also known as oil day, since – get this – 710 looks like oil when you flip it and reverse it. In this case, “oil” refers to cannabis extracts and concentrates, commonly known as dabs.

Oils have gone a little more mainstream in recent years as the medical community has embraced the benefits of extracts for patients looking for quick relief. Dabbing hits hard, as anyone who’s taken a hit off a rig can attest. While the typical THC content of marijuana flower varies from 10-25%, concentrates used for dabbing (referred to by their texture such as wax, shatter, crumble, etc.) can fall anywhere from 50-90%. That’s because the process of creating dabs strips all the plant material out of the cannabis flower, leaving just the cannabinoids & terpenes and providing a cleaner smoking experience that many cannabis veterans enjoy.

Dabbing is one of the more complex forms of consuming cannabis, with required equipment including a nail and a blowtorch. It’s not for the faint of heart or cannabis first-timers, but you’re not kicked out of the 710 party if you’re not ready to dab just yet. That’s because oils are also found in vape pens and tinctures, two less intimidating forms of medicating.

If 710 has taught us anything, it’s that the cannabis community is getting more creative all the time. The fact that there’s a special holiday reserved for a specific form of consumption means that more attention will continue to be paid to the unique experience and preference of each individual patient. That’s a good thing for consumers and cannabis advocates alike.
